This beautifully illustrated book is filled with a wealth of information on early owners and historic images. The Wesco neighborhood was selected because it is Nantucket's earliest residential subdivison laid out in 1678 by proprietors, or shareholders of the island.
"The majority of the eight-five houses on these four streets were homes to the families of mariners, merchants and tradesmen. More than fifty whaling captains lived in this neighborhood, although many of them spent more time at sea than at home, leaving the domestic responsibilites entirely in the hands of their capable wives, one of whom packed her trunks and her two young children and accompanied her husband on a four-and-half-year voyage during which she gave birth to two daughters. Although some reveal less than others, each house has a story to tell; with a little imagination and the help of old photos, the history of Nantucket comes alive, house by house."
