LIMITED EDITION HARDBOUND BOOK

Story of the Atheneum from its inception in 1834 to the present day complete with photos, illustrations, town records and more.

"One hundred and seventy-five years ago, in 1834, the Nantucket Athenuem was incorporated ....A cultural institution with a library, museum collection and lecture hall, the Atheneum owes its name to Atena, the Greek goddess of wisdom...Originally housed in a converted Universalist Church at the corner of Pearl (now India) and Federal Streets, the first library building burned down on the night of the Great Fire, July 13, 1846, and all but a handful of books and artifacts were destroyed.  A new home for the Atheuem was soon constructed on the same site; that impressive 1874 Greek Revival building, with golden letter of its name in the pediment, still anchors the downtown."
